HYDE PARK – Just months after losing her re-election bid for the state senate, Republican Sue Serino has confirmed that she is running to be the next Dutchess County Executive.  The Hyde Park Republican served in the state senate from 2016-2022 before losing to Democrat Senator Michelle Hinchey, after redistricting pitted the two incumbents against each other.  The former senator told Mid-Hudson News that a formal campaign launch will be taking place in the coming weeks.

She already has a platform in place.

“I don’t think anybody was a bigger champion when it came to fighting (former Governor Andrew) Cuomo when it came to the nursing home debacle that he did and all the lives that were lost (during the early days of the pandemic),” she said. “I know the challenges that our seniors face, our young people. It is about jobs and helping the economy. Helping our small businesses. I am a small business owner. I get it. I know how hard it is to do business in the State of New York.”

Serino began her political career as a councilwoman in the Town of Hyde Park in 2010 before being elected to the Dutchess County Legislature in 2011.

Dutchess County Legislature Chairman Gregg Pulver had contemplated running for the position but withdrew after Serino expressed interest.  Pulver said he is going to support her campaign for the county executive seat.

Congressman Marc Molinaro was the Dutchess County Executive until resigning to head to Washington in January of this year.  Before leaving Poughkeepsie, Molinaro appointed Serino to a position at the Dutchess County Office for the AgingMolinaro was also one of the first to encourage Serino to run for his former seat.

In addition to Pulver, Dutchess County Sheriff Kirk Imperati and County Clerk Brad Kendall have also thrown their support behind Serino’s bid.

East Fishkill Town Supervisor Nick D’Alessandro, also a Republican, has intimated to supporters that he is also considering a campaign for county executive.  To that extent, the supervisor has filed paperwork with the New York State Board of Elections establishing a campaign fund for a possible run.
