GOSHEN – Road patrol deputies in the Orange County Sheriff’s Office are equipped with body-worn cameras, but corrections officers in the jail are not.

The new administration of the office plans to change that.

Assistant Undersheriff Evelyn Mallard, who is in charge of the jail, said those body-cams would provide an extra layer of security.

“The body cameras help keep our officers more professional because they know they are on camera and anybody that knows they are on camera, I think, just changes behavior a little bit if they know they put the button on and they know they’re on. That, I think will help, but I also think will help with litigation because we get several complaints that are frivolous complaints,” she said.

The jail is currently fitted with static, mounted cameras with no audio, and there are often blind spots in the system.
