Orange County State Supreme Court Justice Robert Onofry

GOSHEN – State Supreme Court Justice Robert Onofry will be ending his 50-year career in the field of law at the end of the month when he retires from the bench.

The justice began his career as a private practice lawyer before being elected as Port Jervis City Court judge. While serving for two six-year terms, he was assigned periodically as acting city court judge in the cities of Middletown and Newburgh.

Onofry went on to be elected as Orange County Surrogate Court judge and acting Supreme Court justice.

He reflected on his many years on the bench.

“The thing I enjoyed the most was a combination of the writing – the issuing the decisions – and working with the attorneys and serving the clients,” he said. “I have always viewed the role of the judge as one of serving the people; that that’s your primary responsibility.”

Justice Onofry plans on traveling after he retires, but beyond that the 74-year-old has not made any firm plans.
