CARMEL – Putnam County lawmakers took swift action Thursday night and approved a 10 percent property tax exemption on assessed value for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers.

The move comes after the state gave localities permission to enact the tax reduction.

The goal of the measure is to assist those volunteers with their tax bills, but also help in recruitment and retention of new members.

County Executive Kevin Byrne supports the effort. “This is government at its best; supporting and giving back to those who do the selfless work of protecting their communities and neighbors,” he said.

“This isn’t traditionally thought of as a public safety issue, but it is,” said County Legislature Chairman Paul Jonke. “Providing this tax deduction is just another incentive in retaining a strong volunteer fire and ambulance corps.”

Earlier this week, Dutchess County Legislature Chairman Gregg Pulver proposed a similar measure for firefighters and ambulance workers in his county. That resolution is expected to be approved by that county legislature in the weeks ahead.
