NEWBURGH – The four Newburgh Free Academy teachers who reportedly made comments perceived to be insensitive about an African American student’s hair extension that was found on the floor last spring, have been given the green light to return to work.

The high school teachers – three women and a man – were suspended with pay since last June.

In a cryptic resolution approved by the Newburgh board of education last week, members adopted a resolution accepting a hearing officer’s decision and directing the superintendent to “effectuate the terms of said decision.”

Discussion by members was conducted behind closed doors prior to the vote in public.

Conditions of the resolution included that a letter of reprimand be placed in each offending teacher’s personnel folder.

Five board members voted to allow the faculty members to return to the classroom while two voted against it and two others were absent.

School district spokeswoman Cassie Sklarz provided Mid-Hudson News with an emailed statement on Friday morning. “The Board voted last week to implement discipline prescribed by state appointed hearing officers with respect to two teachers who were subject to disciplinary action commenced in June 2022,” she wrote.
