KINGSTON – The Reher Center for Immigration Culture and History has received a technical assistance grant from the Preservation League of New York State and the New York State Council on the Arts.

The $4,000 grant will fund lead, mold, and asbestos testing in the historic building at 101 Broadway in Kingston.

“This project is a vital step for the Reher Center to preserve these powerful spaces that show the lifestyle of the immigrant Jewish Reher family, who loved above their bread bakery for nearly 100 years,” said Center Executive Director Sarah Litvin. “Eventually, immersive exhibits in these spaces will elevate and amplify the many stories of immigrant families to our region, past and present.”

The third floor of the building is currently not usable due to deterioration. Before any rehabilitation work can begin, the building and roof must be tested for mold, lead, and asbestos, and a plan for remediation created.

Also receiving grants are Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society, Safe Harbors of the Hudson Valley, and the Village of Montgomery.
