POUGHKEEPSIE – Dutchess County Family Court Justice Jeffrey Martin has been named “Acting Supreme Court Justice” by the Chief Administrative Judge of the Courts.  The appointment was made on December 29, 2022.  In New York, lower court judges, such as those serving in family or county court can be named as acting supreme court judges to assist in handling the overwhelming caseload carried by elected justices of the supreme court.

Noted for being a very humble man, Judge Martin called the appointment “an honor”, and continued, saying, “I look forward to the new challenges and the opportunity to continue to serve our community.”

Judge Martin, a Democrat from Red Hook, is well-known for his judicial temperament throughout the Hudson Valley legal community.  The judge graduated from Vermont Law School in 1985 and was a partner in the law firm of McCabe, Martin, Coleman, and Ventosa, primarily practicing matrimonial and family court law.  The father of five and avid baseball fan also served as a Red Hook Town Justice beginning in 2007 until being elected to the Dutchess County Family Court for a 10-year term that began on January 1, 2018.

Martin is revered by many lawyers for his fairness in the courtroom.  Poughkeepsie attorney Kelley Enderley said, “Judge Martin is an excellent judge who will serve the community well as an acting supreme justice. He exemplifies the standard that aspiring future judges should seek to achieve,” adding that “His compassionate nature and willingness to listen to all sides before making a decision has gained him respect from the legal community throughout the region.”
Enderley’s colleague, attorney Ron McGaw echoed her sentiment. “I have appeared before Judge Martin many times – he is a great judge and will be a great addition handling supreme court matters here in Dutchess.”
