Free bus service comes to Newburgh for three months

NEWBURGH – Travel in the City of Newburgh has gotten a little easier for residents who do not have cars as state funding will cover the cost of city bus fares for the next three months.

Senator James Skoufis (D, Cornwall) secured $67,500 in the state budget to pay the fares so residents can ride any of the four routes in the city for free.

“We need to see if people are going to utilize this more and people are going to hop on those buses when there is no fare. If it’s successful, that between the state and the county that we can find a way to re-up this program with the stat budget due on April 1,” he said on Thursday.

Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson (D, Newburgh) the cold weather emphasizes the need for more bus shelters, bus schedules.

Senator-elect Rob Rolison (R, Poughkeepsie), currently the mayor of the City of Poughkeepsie, noted that his city’s bus system was inefficient for years so it was merged with Dutchess County’s adding more routes and increasing ridership.

Skoufis also credited County Legislator Kevindaryan Lujan with supporting the program.
