LIBERTY – A seminar hosted by the Sullivan Renaissance was conducted Wednesday detailing Sullivan County’s recently completed Comprehensive Housing Strategy report.

“When you look at the coalition we have put together to work on this, Robert Wood Johnson has shown us that you need a broad and diverse partnership to work on all these issues,” said John Liddle, Sullivan County’s director of health and human services.

Liddle said homelessness is a strong indicator regarding a community’s overall health.

“Those who live on the street for any length of time, or at least six months, their average life expectancy is 52 years old. When you think about the average American being 77, 78, think about what homelessness does to the health of a community,” he said. “That impacts all of us. You certainly hope you would not be in that situation, a family member would never be in that situation. But when somebody is chronically homeless, it lowers their life expectancy by somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 years, and that really hurts a community’s health.”

The report looks the current market conditions, challenges and the responses needed to meet the housing needs in the community.
