ALBANY – Assemblyman Colin Schmitt (R, – New Windsor) called for a formal State Assembly investigation into State Attorney General Letitia James’ handling of allegations of sexual misconduct involving her longtime Chief of Staff Ibrahim Khan and his resignation.

According to published reports, Khan had previously been accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a staffer in the New York City Public Advocate’s office when James held that position in 2017.

Schmitt said the State Assembly has “an obligation to conduct a thorough and independent investigation of Attorney General Letitia James’ handling of the allegations of sexual misconduct against her top aide that led to his resignation, as well as published reports that this information was withheld from the public until after the election.”

Schmitt said given the “seriousness of the claims made against Letitia James’ Chief of Staff and his apparent history of violence against women, the Assembly Judiciary Committee must immediately collect all the facts and take appropriate action.”

He called the allegations “credible and serious” and said an investigation cannot wait until the State Legislature reconvenes in January.”

The legislature will convene for its new session in about four weeks. Schmitt will not be among its ranks as he did not seek re-election, but rather unsuccessfully ran against now-Congressman Pat Ryan.
