MONTICELLO – A Fallsburg man was sentenced in Sullivan County Court on Wednesday to life in prison with no possibility of parole for at least 20 years on his conviction of murder in the death of two-year-old Amara Campbell at the Thunderbird Trailer Park in Woodbourne.

Brian Owsinski, 26, pled guilty just before jury selection was scheduled to begin in September, admitting he acted with depraved indifference to Amara’s life by striking her in the stomach at least twice, causing severe injuries that resulted in her death.

The child’s mother had called 911 on January 25 to report her child was unresponsive. Amara was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. An autopsy revealed clear evidence of fatal internal bleeding, said District Attorney Meagan Galligan.

At sentencing, Senior Assistant DA Steven Goldberg argued in favor of the life sentence, noting the impact this case has had on the child’s surviving family members and the law enforcement community.”

“This defendant’s unconscionable acts warrant the life sentence imposed, yet they do not define Amara Campbell’s legacy of courage and love,” said Galligan. “The agony this child suffered will echo throughout the lives of those who loved her and remember her every day.”
