MID-HUDSON – Despite the naysayers’ claims that we are headed into a recession with rising inflation, by all accounts, Black Friday was a huge success for shoppers and merchants.

Malls across the region were packed on the unofficial first shopping day of the holiday season on the day after Thanksgiving.

Shoppers trying to reach the popular Woodbury Common Factory Outlet center in Central Valley had to fight traffic. At one point, the Thruway northbound at exit 16 in Harriman was backed up for three miles as motorists tried to exit for the mall.

Other shopping centers in the Hudson Valley also reported brisk sales.

Saturday has been dubbed Shop Local Day as a marketing push for local businesses.

On Monday, as people return to work and their computers, Cyber Monday online sales are expected to skyrocket.
