SPARROWBUSH – A Sparrowbush couple was rescued from their home on Thanksgiving Day as a second alarm structure fire tore through their 20 Greenwood Drive mobile home located off of Route 42.

Neighbors who provided initial assistance and response said they saw smoke coming from the eves and immediately called for help and responded to assist the couple.  One neighbor who was able to get the couple out, said he and others also attempted to rescue both of the couple’s dogs.

“It was pitch black in there; completely filled with smoke.  I couldn’t see anything at all, so I kept my leg extended to the doorway so that I wouldn’t lose my way,” a neighbor said.  “We were able to get both of the residents out, and one of their dogs is safe.  We tried, but we couldn’t find the other dog.”

Sparrowbush Engine Company Chief Jeremy Swingle relayed the sad news that the couple’s second dog was located once firefighters were on scene, but was unfortunately deceased.

A heavy response with multiple lines and firefighters quickly on scene did rapidly stop the blaze from extending further.  However, Swingle said that while firefighters were able to contain the fire to the rear bedroom, bathroom and hallway, the house is a total loss due to smoke damage.

Swingle said the origin of the fire was in the rear bedroom area, but the cause was undetermined as of Friday morning.  He said it is believed to have started either by a kerosene heater in the hallway, or to be of an electrical cause.

The couple and their rescued dog were cared for on scene by firefighters and EMS responders.
