MONTICELLO – The countywide Sullivan County solid waste tax imposed on all homeowners and businesses in 2010 will be eliminated completely in 2023.

When first implemented, the $6 million raised was used to pay down debt; that tax was reduced in subsequent years and now, with the solid condition the county is in, the county legislature opted to eliminate the tax all together in 2023.

County Manager Josh Potosek is hopeful it will be permanently removed.

“Paying off the debt and doing some other things with the landfill, more efficiencies and some revenue, I think we are able to have it permanently abolished. It’s something we have to take up every year they way it’s structured right now as a local law that allows this to be assessed, but I think going into this year and seeing how next year goes, it is our intent that it’s going to be a permanent elimination of the fee,” he said.

Most recently, the fee was raising $2.5 million per year with homeowners paying an annual charge of $50 and businesses were generally paying about $125.
