NEWBURGH – Representatives of the New York Civil Liberties Union and supporters were in Newburgh on Wednesday calling for passage of state sentencing reform legislation.

The measures – Eliminate Mandatory Minimums Act, Second Look Act, and Earned Time Act – were introduced in the state legislature during the 2022 session related to prison sentences.

Civil Liberties Union representative Brandon Holmes of Kingston is hopeful the bills will be addressed in the new year.

“There are some concerns throughout the Hudson Valley region in particular, where a lot more of the conservative rhetoric has seemed to have dominated the narrative, but with Governor Hochul beating Lee Zeldin, I think we are going to be able to put the conversations about rolling back bail reform and pass criminal justice reforms, we are going to be able to put those conversations behind us and actually get to the core of the work that needs to be done in New York,” he said.

The civil liberties groups said, “Despite months of false attack ads from right-wing donors and billionaires, the movement to end mass incarceration in New York and achieve real safety for all is stronger than ever.”
