TOWN OF POUGHKEEPSIE – On the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month of 2022, Dutchess County veterans and elected officials gathered at the Dutchess County War Memorial to honor veterans of the US Armed Forces and thank them for their commitment to preserving freedom.

Calling the United States a “Nation of Heroes,” Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro, now Congressman-elect Molinaro (NY-19), said, “When the world calls, when our nation calls, heroes step forward.” He said veterans are an inspiration to the nation.

Molinaro was joined at the ceremony by Congressman Pat Ryan (NY-18).  Ryan is a West Point graduate with two combat tours in the Middle East.  In thanking his fellow veterans, the congressman reminded everyone, “At this moment, we still have thousands, if not tens of thousands of brave American men and women in harm’s way right now, keeping us safe, keeping us secure, so that we can be here.”

Ryan and Molinaro both stressed the need for an increase in resources to assist veterans who have served.  “We have to do our part to honor that sacred and solemn obligation… that those who risked their life for our country – that we will take care of them and their families in every single way,” Ryan said.  Both men fought tirelessly to secure the long-term operation of the Castle Point VA Hospital and have been ardent supporters of the Vet2Vet peer counseling program.

Dutchess County Veterans Services Director Adam Roche, who served in some of the fiercest battles in the Middle East as a Marine used the event to remind veterans that his office is available to provide numerous services to those that have served.  “The Dutchess County Veterans Services Office, in partnership with many outside organizations such as MHA Dutchess Vet2Vet, has created a one-stop-shop to provide programming and services to veterans, with a staff that takes pride in helping our veterans navigate the myriad of agencies that veterans are forced to deal with.  We cut through the red tape to help our veterans get every single benefit they are entitled to.”
