MONTICELLO – At least two instances of people setting up tables outside businesses – one in Liberty and another in Monticello – asking people for personal information in return for a free phone or tablet, have surfaced in Sullivan County.

County Office for the Aging Director Kelly Stoller said those are scams that people should avoid.

She said senior citizens and people with limited means are targets.

“Unfortunately, the people that gave them the information aren’t going to know what’s going to happen until it happens, and then it’s too late, then their bank account is empty,” she said. “There are so many things I think – fake IDs, fake passports, all this information that they gave to these people could be used fore a large number of not very good things.”

Stoller said people should not fall for those scams and under no circumstances give out your personal information.
