Orange-Ulster BOCES $158 million capital project faces vote

GOSHEN – Residents in the Orange-Ulster BOCES district will have the opportunity on Tuesday, October 25, to vote on a $158.8 million capital project to renovate and upgrade its Gibson Road and Arden Hill campuses.

The Career and Technical Education Center at Gibson Road would be updated at a cost of $67 million with renovations including a new roof; replacement of single-pane windows; upgrading the electrical, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning; advancements in energy efficiency; construction of a security vestibule to establish a single point of entry; and replacement and upgrade of failing sanitary and well systems.

The Emanuel Axelrod Education Center, also at Gibson Road, would be updated at a cost of $57 million. The work would include roof replacement; replacing and upgrading electrical, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning; advancements in energy efficiency; construction of a security vestibule to establish a single point of entry; creation of support space for students; and conversion of administrative space to student classrooms.

The Arden Hill campus would be updated at a cost of $35 million. Renovations would include roof replacement on the main building, replacement of exterior windows, renovation of the third floor to add 10 classrooms, renovation of the north wing to add 17 classrooms, construction of a new gymnasium – no gym currently exists, and renovation of the office building to allow for conversion to classrooms on Gibson Road.

The average cost per month to a homeowner with a property assessed at $300,000 would be $4.58, district officials said.

The project is eligible for state aid, which would be reimbursed to the local school districts.

Voting will be held from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. on October 25 at one of the following locations:

  • Goshen Main Street Administration, 227 Main St. Goshen

  • Highland Falls Intermediate School, 52 Mountain Ave., Highland Falls
  • Kiryas Joel Public School, 1 Dinev Road, Monroe
  • Town of Marlborough Community Room, Courthouse, 2 Milton Turnpike, Milton
  • Middletown Board of Education, 223 Wisner Ave., Middletown
  • Minisink Valley Intermediate School, 2320 Route 6, Slate Hill
  • Otisville Elementary School, 2525 Mount Hope Road, Otisville
  • Monroe-Woodbury Education Center, 278 Route 32, Central Valley
  • Orange-Ulster BOCES Arden Hill Campus, 4 Harriman Dr., Goshen

Residents of the Newburgh Enlarged City School District, which is not a component district of Orange-Ulster BOCES, are not eligible to vote on the proposed capital project
