ALBANY – New York State Police Superintendent Kevin Bruen, in the position for just over one year resigned Friday.  The resignation is effective October 19, 2022.  Pursuant to the policies of the State Police, First Deputy Superintendent Steven Nigrelli will become Acting Superintendent.

NYSP Superintendent Bruen

Bruen, 59, was not a member of law enforcement and was appointed to the position by disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo in June of 2021.

In a statement on Friday, Governor Kathy Hochul said “Today I accepted the resignation of State Police Superintendent Kevin Bruen,” and continued, saying “I thank him for his years of public service.”

Bruen has fallen out of favor with Governor Hochul recently and she has ordered an investigation into alleged wrongdoing by Bruen in which the superintendent allegedly neglected to respond to several internal complaints against his friend and former State Police Human Resources Director, Maryellen Tedesco.

Mid-Hudson News sources familiar with the complaints said Bruen failed to respond to several complaints from employees of the New York State Police against Tedesco due to a close personal relationship.

Tedesco resigned from her civilian position with the agency last month as she was being investigated for allegedly making disparaging remarks about a civilian applicant that uses a wheelchair.

The New York State Police official bio of  Bruen notes that he has been with the agency for more than 20 years. He started with the State Police as Assistant Counsel. He served as a legal consultant and advisor to district attorneys, investigators, troopers, and commanders on criminal investigations and proceedings. He also provided training to members and recruit Troopers in the Academy, and served as a subject matter expert in legislative matters that involved the State Police.

Prior to his state service, Bruen worked as an Assistant District Attorney in both the Kings and Warren County District Attorney’s Offices.
