PORT EWEN – Ulster County Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the shooting of a woman as she sat on the porch of her residence Thursday night.

Deputies responded to the residence on North Court in Port Ewen around 9:50 p.m. for a report of gunshots and a woman screaming.

They found the 34-year-old victim outside on the porch suffering from a wound to her hip.

The victim was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie by the Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad for treatment of her injuries and is expected to recover, detectives said.

The woman’s young daughter was home at the time of the shooting but was not injured.

The preliminary investigation revealed the perpetrator fired at least five rounds at the woman from a handgun before fleeing.

Detectives were assisted by the State Police, City of Poughkeepsie Police, Town of Ulster Police and Mobile Life Support Services.

The case remains open and authorities said the shooting does not appear to be a random act of violence.
