NEWBURGH – It has been one week since someone opened fire on spectators leaving a Newburgh Free Academy football game, and now, the district athletic director, Howard Harrison, has put the brakes on all home athletic competitions at all school district or local municipal venues.

The “pause” is in effect from Thursday, October 6 through Thursday, October 13.

At the same time, Harrison said district officials are “seeking any potential sites for home competitions.”

“Both the physical and emotional well-being of all of our athletes, employees, and spectators remains our priority,” Harrison wrote in a letter to the community on Thursday, the 6th.

He said the pause is temporary and has been mutually agreed upon among Section IX district and athletic leaders. “Additional protocols will be shared prior to resuming traditional home games,” he wrote.

Harrison said that although event protocols are reviewed with the police, the reason for the timeout is to “conduct an in-depth review” of the events of Friday, September 30 to provide law enforcement “additional time to investigate.”
