GOSHEN – A Newburgh man who broke into his former girlfriend’s home on three occasions in violation of an order of protection, was sentenced in Orange County Court on Monday to 11 years in state prison and five years of post-release supervision.

Ricardo Mendoza, 28, had been convicted after trial of nine counts of burglary and criminal contempt.

As proven at trial, in August 2021, a stay away order was issued, yet in October, he entered the woman’s home, grabbed her arm, trying to drag her out of bed.

On December 1, he again entered her home, grabbed her phone from her hand and stole items from her pocketbook before fleeing.

On January 13 of this year, the woman returned home and found Mendoza inside. He punched, kicked and squeezed her neck, and threw her phone to prevent her from calling the police.

After each incident, he could not be located by responding police.

An indicted was secured and Mendoza was arrested.

“The cycle of domestic violence ends when perpetrators, such as this, are held to account for their actions,” said District Attorney David Hoovler. “I commend the strength and bravery of the survivor in this case who deserves her life free of the fear of this defendant.”
