NEWBURGH – Both Republican State Assemblyman Colin Schmitt of New Windsor and Democratic Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson of Newburgh are calling for more police action in the wake of the gun violence in the City of Newburgh.

Their comments come following the shootings of three adults following a football game Friday night in Newburgh between Newburgh Free Academy and Warwick High School.

That incident “must be a breaking point that precipitates a full-scale intervention by local, state and federal law enforcement,” Schmitt said. Solving gun violence will “require an effort by local leaders to solve the root causes of these violent criminal acts. I support the use of any and all governmental resources necessary to achieve this goal in real-time, as well as repealing the state’s failed no bail law and other so-called criminal justice reforms that are fueling this crisis.”

Jacobson called the shootings in Newburgh and Poughkeepsie “appalling” and said there are too many guns on the streets. He called on local police to “double and triple the efforts” to work with State Police to get the illegal guns off the streets.

Jacobson asked local residents to work with police to learn where the illegal guns are coming from.

“It’s time that we get done with these guns. We need to make sure that the trafficking ends.”
