BEACON – Florida may be underwater as Hurricane Ian continues to hammer the Sunshine State, but during the recent summer drought in the Mid-Hudson Valley, one community had an ample supply of water.

Mayor Lee Kyriacou said the City of Beacon is fortunate because it has several water sources.

“Because we have both dams and well water, we are always in good shape, even if we declare a stage-one drought with our dams, which we did,” he said. “We have our well water and we are going to be drilling a third well in the next year, so I think we are in a uniquely safe position as a community.”

During the dry summer months, several municipalities declared drought emergencies prohibiting outside water use.
