GOSHEN – A proposed 2.7 percent per year pay raise for the position of Orange County sheriff has been cut in half by county legislators meeting in committee.

The sheriff currently makes $167,769 per year.

The four-year proposal, which would have seen the 2.7 percent annual raise, bringing the salary to $186,999 by 2026, was cut back to a final salary of $175,500.

That equates to more than a 1.4 percent raise per year.

If approved by the full legislature, the salary hikes will be subject to a permissive referendum by Orange County voters.

Incumbent Sheriff Carl DuBois is retiring at the end of the year. Former sheriff’s Captain and current Montgomery Village Deputy Chief Paul Arteta, a Republican, and Democrat Bernie Rivers, the former chief of the state Environmental Conservation Police, will face off in the November election for the sheriff’s position.
