ATHENS – A Cairo woman was killed Saturday evening after her 2004 Honda Accord was struck head-on by a vehicle that was traveling in the opposite direction on Route 9W in the Town of Athens and crossed over into her path.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office said Danielle McKenna of Cairo was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the car that crossed lanes, John Peterson of Coxsackie, was flown to Albany Medical Center with serious injuries.
Deputies said the investigation is continuing and charges are pending.
The crash, which occurred minutes after 6 p.m., involved Peterson’s 2015 Nissan sedan striking Peterson’s 2004 Honda Accord.
Route 9W was closed for several hours while the crash scene was reconstructed.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Greene County District Attorney’s Office, State Police, Town of Catskill Ambulance, fire departments from Athens, West Athens, and Catskill, Town of Catskill Ambulance, LifeNet and the Greene County Coroner’s Office.
