FISHKILL – The Town of Fishkill has over 3,600 municipal water connections providing service to more than 11,000 residents, and a plan to protect that is complete and awaiting state approval, town officials said.

The town’s Drinking Water Source Protection Plan, being developed for more than a year, identifies risks to the town’s municipal water supply posed by road salts and high-density development. It offers suggestions and resources to mitigate those risks.

Town water operators warn that the high levels of chlorine from road salt, if not addressed, could lead to a future need for the town to purchase expensive filtration systems.

The protection plan cost no local dollars to prepare as the state picked up the tab, equating to more than $140,000 in engineering services free of charge.

Town secretary Greg Totino said as part of the protection program, Fishkill has an advantage with applying for future grant funding.

The town board has yet to adopt the plan.
