CARMEL – Following a 10-year hiatus, the K9 unit of the Carmel Town Police Department is being re-established.

Police Chief Anthony Hoffman said the training for Officer Vincent DeSantola and K9 “Pietro” are in training at the Yonkers Police Department’s K9 school.

Pietro, a two-year-old Czech Shepard, began training in August. The course will last until December and will train Pietro as a dual-purpose patrol and narcotics detection police canine, along with giving Officer DeSantola the skills needed to be a certified police K9 handler.

Pietro is named in memory of late Carmel Police Officer Gary Pietropaolo, Jr.

The team will patrol Carmel, Mahopac and Mahopac Falls when they complete their training.
