PEEKSKILL – The Peekskill Police Department is advising members of the community of an ongoing investigation into local mailbox thefts.

Police believe perpetrators are stealing checks from the U.S Post Office curbside mailbox located at 738 South Street in the city.

They advise people not to place mail containing checks in the curbside mailbox in front of the Peekskill Post Office. It appears that checks are being stolen from that curbside mailbox and the thieves are using them for identity theft and financial fraud.

Investigators recommend people either walk inside the Post Office and place your mail in the lobby drop box or use a different location to mail out you checks/financial documents.

Peekskill is not the only community targeted in this scheme. Other jurisdictions throughout Westchester County are also investigating mailbox theft and check/financial fraud which appears to be an issue for many communities across the country.
