PINE BUSH – A state trooper shot and killed a man who lunged toward officers with a large knife at a residence on Clark Road in the Town of Wawarsing.

The incident that took place on Friday, September 9, claimed the life of 41-year-old Daniel McAlpin.

State Police and the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to assist the Ulster County Mobile Mental Health crisis team where they encountered McAlpin, who was described as being distraught and armed with a large knife.

Officers attempted to engage him in conversation; however, he was non-compliant and ignored repeated commands to drop the knife.

A trooper deployed a Taser, but he advanced toward officers while threatening them with the weapon, they reported.

A second trooper then discharged his issued firearm, striking and killing McAlpine.

As per state law, the Attorney General’s Office is investigating the incident along with the State Police.
