POUGHKEEPSIE –  The Chabad Center in Poughkeepsie will be celebrating a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new Sanderson & Osofsky Chabad Center on September 18. Hundreds of community members and rabbis, including elected officials and other public dignitaries, are expected to attend.
The event will begin at 4:00 p.m. with live music and several concurrent activities for children, including balloon sculpting and a hands-on workshop on making shofars, the ram’s horns customarily blown on the upcoming Rosh Hashanah Jewish New Year holiday. A catered buffet will be served from a tent in the parking lot.
The highlight of the event will be several speeches delivered by community leaders and donors—followed by an official ribbon-cutting and inauguration of the new center, named the Sanderson and Osofsky Chabad Center after its prime contributors.
The new addition is centered on a sizable state-of-the-art sanctuary, according to Chabad Mid-Hudson Valley. That worship space is inspiringly decorated with huge arched windows inlaid with vistas of Rachel’s Tomb and the Old City of Jerusalem, both sacred sites in Judaism. Additionally, the centrally-located ark on the traditional east wall—which stores the venerated Torah scrolls—is trimmed with translucent onyx and illuminated by LED backlights. The expansion also features a social hall complete with a brand-new food prep area—plus a first-in-the-region Judaic library replete with dignified interior design and a rich, inviting selection of books for everyone.
The Chabad Center, the local synagogue and outreach center of the global Chabad Jewish outreach movement, has serviced the regional Jewish community from its facilities at 63 Vassar Road in Poughkeepsie for over three decades.
