MONTICELLO – In light of the amended state law related to carrying a concealed weapon by a licensed individual, the Sullivan County Legislature voted on Thursday to reaffirm that right.

The resolution says that the state recently passed legislation that further restricts the rights of a lawful gun owner with a valid license issued by a superior court judge to carry and possess a firearm in a variety of public places.

And the revised state law says a licensed gun owner’s right to carry and possess a firearm in public buildings is presumptively denied unless the property owner opts out of the provision.

So, the county’s resolution reaffirms its support for the Second Amendment to the US Constitution and says licensed persons may carry unless prohibited by statute or owner declaration.

And as far as the county buildings are concerned, the resolution states the county manager will have the authority to determine which county properties will permit licensed gun owners to possess and carry a firearm on those properties.
