POUGHKEEPSIE – City police in Poughkeepsie are investigating a Thursday afternoon shooting that injured a woman.  The September 1st shooting took place near the intersection of Mansion Street and Winnikee Avenue at approximately 12:35 p.m.

City 911 received multiple reports of shots fired near the intersection that is two blocks away from Warring Elementary School.  Responding officers located a female victim with a gunshot wound to the leg and several shell casings in the intersection.

The victim was uncooperative with the detectives and refused medical assistance from the ambulance crew.  The victim was heard saying, “I’ve been shot before and this is just a graze,” shortly before leaving the steps of the Diaz Deli at the corner of Mansion Street and Winnikee Avenue.  A source who saw the wound said that there was both and entrance and exit wound in the victim’s leg.

One witness told police that they saw a tan-colored SUV fleeing the scene with tires squealing moments after the shots were heard.

Police Captain Richard Wilson told Mid-Hudson News that the police are considering the two occupants as subjects of interest and are attempting to locate the vehicle and the men reported to be inside.

“This is an ongoing investigation and our department is collecting and evaluating evidence at the scene while other officers attempt to locate the SUV of interest.”

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department’s confidential TIP LINE at 845-451-7577.
