WALLKILL – The Town of Shawangunk has declared a state of emergency prohibiting all outdoor burning.

The town board imposed the ban given the extremely dry conditions and the wildfires burning on the Napanoch area of the Minnewaska State Park Preserve.

The ban will remain in effect until lifted by Town Supervisor John Valk, Jr.

The emergency declaration prohibits the burning of any combustible material outdoors, and any outdoor activity that could allow flames or sparks that could result in fire.

All outdoor burning of yard trash, household paper products, bonfires, campfires, warming fire, outdoor fireplaces, chimneys, and cooking fires are prohibited. Cooking of food in a contained gas or charcoal grill is still allowed.
