BEACON – The man killed on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge minutes before 10 p.m. on Tuesday fell through a gap between the roadway and the pedestrian walkway, State Police said on Wednesday.

Troopers said Paul Montenero, 29, of the Town of Poughkeepsie got out of his vehicle when it became disabled on the bridge. He attempted to get to a safer location by trying to gain access to the pedestrian walkway, but didn’t know there was a wide space between the road and the walkway resulting in him falling to his death, police said.

His body was recovered by the Orange County Technical Rescue Team. Troop K State Police were assisted by Troop F members, the New York State Bridge Authority, Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol and City of Newburgh Fire Department.
