Tie-dye bagels were a big hit at the annual Monticello Bagel Festival
Thousands poured into the Village of Monticello for the annual Bagel Festival

MONTICELLO – The Village of Monticello is the self-proclaimed “Bagel Capital” and each August, thousands of people flock to the downtown to enjoy the annual Bagel Festival.

Held this Sunday, it included perhaps a throwback to the tie-dye t-shirts of the 1960s with Monticello Bagel Bakery owner Craig Fleischman introducing the tie-dye bagel with a “shmir” of cream cheese.

Fleischman said the attendance keeps growing year after year.

“The first one, very successful, with a few thousand people, which we really weren’t expecting. Then it got bigger and bigger every year. You can see what’s going on today,” he said.

At its peak, Fleischman said an estimated 10,000 came to the Monticello festival.
