ELLENVILLE – A $3 million emergency shelter at the Hunt Memorial Building in the Village of Ellenville has been completed.

The new project will improve the village’s ability to prepare for and respond to emergencies.

Mayor Jeff Kaplan said hopefully the facility will never be needed.

“Ten years ago or so we had a flood in the Ellenville area and we had nowhere to put the people who were displaced, so we ended up using firehouses and school and we found that when life got back to normal, people still couldn’t go back to their houses yet there was nowhere to house these people,” he said.

With the help of state funding, an emergency shelter has been established in the Hunt Memorial Building.

Kaplan said the village is “now more resilient and better able to respond during disasters due to this new emergency shelter.”
