PEEKSKILL – Fire Saturday morning at a residence in Simpson Place in Peekskill damaged the 2 ½-story private dwelling.

The fire was initially reported at 6 a.m. as a blaze in a barbecue pit, but arriving firefighters encountered heavy fire out of a window of the wood frame building.

It was confirmed that all occupants were out of the house.

Firefighters who entered the home through the front door, were met with zero visibility conditions and high heat as they made their way to the seat of the fire.

Once the room of origin was located, the fire was quickly knocked down and members began checking for fire extension.

An additional hose line was stretched to the rear of the building as there was a pile of debris burning and spreading up the side of the building toward the upper floors.

The incident was brought under control in less than an hour and all units returned to service by 10 a.m.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital with minor injuries and was treated and released.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
