TOWN OF GREENBURGH – The Greenburgh Town Board has appointed Captain Kobie Powell as the department’s new police chief. The lifelong Greenburgh resident has risen through the ranks during his 25-year tenure with the police department to become the first black chief.

Powell will replace former Chief Chris McNerney who resigned to become police chief in Larchmont, and interim chief George Langworth, former police chief in Dobbs Ferry and Westchester County commissioner of Public Safety.

The new chief will assume his new role on August 22 with a former ceremony on September 14.

He will oversee a department with 115 sworn officers and 42 civilian members and an annual budget of $25.5 million.

Powell earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Mercy College, Summa Cum Laude.
