NEW CITY – A 19-year-old North Bergen, New Jersey man was sentenced in Rockland County Court to 19 years in state prison in connection with his guilty plea to manslaughter.

Jayden Rodriguez was also sentenced to five years of post-release supervision.

On September 1, 2019, Rodriguez entered a Spring Valley apartment building and fired several shots at an individual identified as Emerson Jean-Baptiste, killing him.

Rodriguez was arrested the following day by Spring Valley Police with assistance from North Bergen Police. The firearm used in the crime was recovered in an unrelated matter several days later by Town of Haverstraw Police.

Rodriguez, who was 17 at the time of the homicide, was eligible for youthful offender status at the time of his sentencing, which would have resulted in a much shorter prison sentenced, but based on the nature of the crime, the court declined to grant that designation and sentenced him as an adult.
