BEACON – The City of Beacon currently has four hybrid police vehicles and has now added an all-electric car for its detective division.

While electric vehicles are typically charged with fossil fuel-generated power, the majority of the power for the police cars comes from renewable energy, said City Administrator Chris White.

“We are producing about 70 percent of the electricity that the city uses including for recharging these cars at our solar facility. We are also going to be expanding how much solar energy we produce by putting an installation on our highway garage early next year,” he said.

The solar power the city presently captures is coming from an installation on top of the former city landfill.
