Tannersville man runs from police, suffers fatal fall from cliff

DURHAM – A man who ran from police after he was pulled over for vehicle and traffic violations on Greene County Route 67 in the Town of Durham, fled into a wooded area, fell from a cliff and died, State Police said.

Christopher Stanton, 40, from Tannersville, who had several felony bench warrants, fled on foot from the front passenger seat after being pulled over at around 11:30 p.m. on Monday.

The trooper entered the woods looking for Stanton and spotted him at the bottom of a steep rock embankment. The officer made his way down and rendered first aid until emergency personnel arrived.

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office, Greenville EMS, and Greene County Paramedics arrived to assist in first aid and extradition of Stanton who was airlifted to Albany Medical Center where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.

The investigation is ongoing and being conducted by State Police and the Attorney General’s Office.
