WAPPINGER – A three-car accident on Route 9D in the Town of Wappinger at mid-morning on Thursday claimed the life of an 85-year-old Wappinger woman, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office reported on Friday.

Killed in the crash was Katherine Woisin.

Deputies said the primary factor in the accident appears to be failure to yield the right of way on the part of Woisin.

Preliminary investigation revealed Woisin was pulling out onto Route 9D from Alpine Drive when she was struck by another vehicle, which was southbound on Route 9D. Her car was then struck a second time by a northbound vehicle that was attempting to avoid the first crash.

Woisin was pronounced dead at the scene, deputies said.

The investigation is ongoing by the sheriff’s Detective Bureau and Crash Investigation units.

No charges have been filed and the sheriff’s office was assisted at the scene by the Dutchess County Medical Examiner, State Police, State Department of Transportation, and the Hughsonville Fire Department.

Route 9D was closed for four hours during the investigation.
