PORT JERVIS – A 13-year-old boy has been arrested by Port Jervis City Police after he was observed walking toward Church Street, dressed in black and with a handgun in his waistband.

City Police officers located the boy shortly after 11 p.m. on July 30 and the 9 mm semi-automatic gun with a defaced serial number was confiscated.

He was issued an appearance ticket to appear in Orange County Family Court because of his age.

He was charged with criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a defaced firearm.

“Gun violence is blind to age, and the city is safer after this illegal firearm was taken off the streets,” District Attorney David Hoovler said. “We have seen a disturbing uptick in juveniles carrying dangerous and illegal weapons and we will continue to work with all of our law enforcement partners to ensure that these weapons are taken out of the hands of offenders.”
