Suspected major Sullivan County drug supplier operated ‘narcotics supermarket’ out of home

MONTICELLO – A 69-year-old Monticello man was arrested on Monday, August 1 on charges that he was a major drug supplier in Sullivan County.

Sheriff’s deputies and officers from federal, state and local law enforcement agencies executed a search warrant at the John Crawford Senior Housing complex at 33 Liberty Street in Monticello at 5 in the morning.

Police arrested resident Shedret Whitehead and seized crack cocaine, heroin, crystal meth, psilocybin mushrooms, Ecstasy pills and a large quantity of cannabis.

He was charged with several counts of felony drug possession, criminal possession of cannabis, and criminal possession of drug paraphernalia.

“It appears that the defendant was running a narcotics supermarket out of his apartment,” said Undersheriff Eric Chaboty.

Whitehead has four prior felony convictions.

He was arraigned in this latest incident and committed to the Sullivan County Jail without bail.

Assisting in the investigation were Homeland Security Investigations, State Police, Monticello Village Police, and District Attorney’s investigators.

The search warrant was prepared by District Attorney Meagan Galligan.
