Mayor Steven Noble puts his 'John Hancock" on the Kingston rent control legislation

KINGSTON – Mayor Steven Noble wasted no time in signing the Emergency Tenant Protection act into law in the City of Kingston. The common council approved the measure on Thursday.

Kingston is the first municipality in New York to opt into the program north of Rockland County.

Noble said with this new law, there are more than 1,200 rental units that are now entitled to rent stabilization.

“Declaring a housing crisis and opting into the ETPA is a step in the right direction,” said Council President Andrea Shaut. “Although it does not resolve the crisis for all tenants, this will make a significant difference for many of our community members and neighbors.”

Shaut said, though, that “this cannot be the end though. We need to seriously look at long-term solutions to help all neighbors in their right to housing.”
