Orange County loses health commissioner to Nassau County

Dr. Irina Gelman

GOSHEN – Orange County Health Commissioner Dr. Irina Gelman has been named commissioner of health for Nassau County.

Gelman began her tenure in Orange County in July 2018. She previously served as Fulton County director of public health.

She will be transitioning from a county with over 385,000 people to one with a population of 1.4 million.

Dr. Gelman was the recipient of the 2018 New York State Woman of Distinction Award.

Gelman continues to serve as vice president of the board of the New York State Association of County Health Officials and remains an active fellow of the New York State Academy of Medicine.

Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus commended Gelman “for her tireless work for Orange County, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, as she played an integral role in the response to the unprecedented public health emergency.”

Neuhaus said a search for a new health commissioner will begin immediately.
