NEW WINDSOR – New Windsor Town Supervisor George Meyers is a retired high-ranking member of the State Police and a no-nonsense administrator, and he supports armed police officers in schools.

His concern stems from the latest rash of school shootings including the massacre in the Texas school.

“Things have gone really out of whack here,” he said. “Then you have these gun people who think it’s okay for everybody to have AK-47s. I don’t think it’s okay. I don’t think it’s fair to the people and definitely not fair to the poor cop who shows up with a 9-millimeter.”

Meyers said he would be willing to negotiate the cost of placing armed cops in schools, but school districts should “without a doubt” have them in the buildings.
