PORT JERVIS – Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler provided high-tech equipment to the City of Port Hervis Police Department on Monday.  The License Plate Reader (LPR) will help the city police identify stolen vehicles instantaneously.

In addition to stolen cars, the device allows for the rapid detection of vehicles being operated with forged or suspended registrations.  The LPR will help to free up police resources which can be redistributed to other areas of critical need within the Department and for the citizens of the City, according to Hoovler.

In a statement, Hoovler said LPRs, particularly when used in conjunction with the resources of the Hudson Valley Crime Analysis Center, can provide leads on patterns of criminal activity, including information that can lead to the identity of those committing shootings and drug transactions.  This useful law enforcement technology is often beyond the budgetary limits of local law enforcement agencies.

“I am glad to be able to assist our law enforcement partners, to leverage reliable technology, and to free up police officers to more effectively patrol and investigate crime in our communities,” said Hoovler. “I know that devices like License Plate Readers can provide valuable evidence for use in some criminal investigations and prosecutions.”

“The type of technology provided by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office is expensive and difficult for the City to afford,” said City of Port Jervis Police Chief William Worden. “We are grateful to DA Hoovler for the equipment which will greatly enhance our ability to detect crime and improve traffic safety in the City of Port Jervis.”
