One dead and one critical after hit and run in Montgomery

MONTGOMERY – One person is dead and another man is in critical condition after being struck by a car early Saturday morning on Route 52 in Montgomery.  The victims were on an electric bike when they were struck by a car that left the scene of the accident.

The electric bicycle’s passenger, Christiana Kovacs, age 21 of Montgomery, was pronounced dead at the scene.  The e-bike’s operator, 21-year-old Jaleek Johnson of Walden was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center and is listed in critical condition.

State police responded to a report of a fatal collision between a bike and a car on Route 52 between Belair Road and Harts Lane in Montgomery at 12:44 a.m. Saturday, July 9.  The preliminary investigation revealed that Johnson was operating the e-bike on Route 52 with Kovacs as a passenger when they were struck by a vehicle traveling westbound on Route 52.

The vehicle that hit the victims fled the scene.

Troopers located the suspect vehicle, a 2013 Subaru Impreza that was operated by 22-year-old Logan Kelly of Walden.

The State Police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.  The Town of Montgomery Police assisted at the scene.
